We Are Community for the week of July 14th, 2025, by Joyce Steiner

We Are community 263

I will admit that I have anguished over writing this column all week.  I have written it over and over in my mind and wondered what I should say or not say.  About ten minutes ago I was researching Medicaid and trying to get facts to support my thoughts when I got a mind newsflash.  In 263 ”We Are Community” columns, I have had exactly 2, yes two, critical comments that I am too political.  I also remembered that I have had hundreds of people who seem to like what I write and encourage me.  So, I think you will just have to understand that I was raised in a conservative Republican home not a Trump party home but now I am a “little old liberal lady” who probably loves too strongly and who really does believe in scattering Kindness and Love to all (unless you have personally proven to me that you are creepy, not trustworthy and mean).  If you do not like the thoughts wandering through my mind, please feel free to scroll on.

So…Lots happened this week and too much to do with such high temps and humidity.  Some of the high points.  Circle met on Wednesday at the PCCC.  We will be serving pie, cake, cookies, ice cream and root beer floats at Old Settler on Friday and Saturday.  Come hungry.  We would love to have you join our group on the 2nd Wednesday at 6 pm at the PCCC.  Our goal is fellowship, helping our community, keeping up the PCCC for the use of the community by providing a space for events such as weddings, funerals, family gatherings, class reunions and more.  There are no dues, only a willingness to help.  We normally have a meal followed by a short meeting.  Wednesday, we welcomed Rebekah Baker from just north of Plymouth who has a business called Abraham’s Daughters that features home-made soaps and candles.

When I drove around the corner to the store on Saturday morning, I saw that a large limb had fallen in back of the store.  It miraculously missed the store building but took down the electrical line.  A call to Ameren got the line put back up but the limb is still resting comfortably on the ground. Could have been so much worse.  Think we got about an inch and a half of rain.

Speaking of the store, a friend brought in 3 huge boxes of lamps and lamp parts this week.  Lots of Aladdin things and many pretty shades-please come in and look at them if you like lamps.  Sold my pink restaurant booth.  Loved that booth!

Puff sometimes tires of Sal’s constant activity and seems to just want a bit of peace.  She jumped out the door on July 4th but I managed to catch her and bring her in.  She jumped out again this week.  I had her in the dip net when I tripped over a brick and fell and she escaped.  She spent the night outside but was more than ready to come in for breakfast the next morning.  Children!

“Love your neighbor as yourself”.  Sound familiar?  Your neighbor is all people.  Recall the story of the Good Samaritan? While others passed by the man who had been beaten and robbed, he stopped and helped the man and paid for his care.  We need to do the same.  When our “neighbors” are being snatched off the streets, their civil rights being ignored and without due process are sent out of the country or to places like the new swamp prison, it is wrong.  All people deserve to be treated with mercy and decency.  America is a country of diversity and is stronger for it.

Love not hate, makes America great.
