We Are Community for the week of Oct 13th, 2025, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 276

Sometimes my life has a bit more excitement than I would like.  Have been getting up at 6 am to get to Smithfield close to 8 am for the Spoon River Drive.  Yesterday, Saturday, it was very foggy when I headed out.  When I got to the Tennessee Junction, my check engine light came on.  Know that could have a variety of causes so was a bit upset.  Since I had just had my oil changed and the van checked over at Moore Tires on Wednesday and since they are open at that ungodly hour, stopped in.  They checked the oil and said it was fine but the nice man said he had no idea what the problem was which was not too comforting.  Had little choice but to drive on to Smithfield and get ready for the day.  Texted a couple of friends who thought it might not be too serious.  When I got back to Plymouth, a neighbor put a tester on the van and got the light to shut off so all seems well.

Love Spoon River at the Red Brick School.  Everyone there is just so nice to be with.  There was a great variety of people and offerings both in the gym and throughout the building.  Had a good show and got home and unloaded in decent time tonight, Sunday, thanks to the help of Curtis and Adrian Baldwin.  Thank You.

On Monday our Illinois Education Association Retired group visited Camps Orchard north east of Macomb.  It was delightful.  I had no idea that an apple orchard could be made up entirely of dwarf trees.  They were close together in rows, supported by wires and with drip irrigation.  What I thought were baby trees were actually fully mature trees and loaded with apples.  Seems one can grow more trees, produce more apples and pick easier from dwarfs.  Who knew.  They made cider, caramel apples, cider donuts and more at the orchard.  Was a most interesting tour.  Got to try a cider slushy and it was delicious.

Monday evening was the Hancock County Democratic meeting in Carthage.  We discussed the fish fry and were very happy with the new location and attendance.

Wednesday the Circle met at the PCCC followed by the Plymouth Village Board meeting.  Jordan Hawes attended the meeting and spoke about his candidacy for
Sheriff of Hancock County.  Thought it spoke well of him to attend the meeting and was glad to meet him.

Learned that Cooki Akers passed away on Thursday.  So sorry to lose a close neighbor.

We finally had a thunder shower and got a bit of rain.  It is so dry that the combines raise so much dust that it is sometimes difficult to see when driving.

Hope you had a good week.  I’m looking forward to getting some book work done from the Drive and to getting some extra sleep.  Wonder how I used to get up so early and drive to school every day for so many years!  Scatter Kindness and Love!
