We Are Community for the week of May 25th, 2026, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 308

It was a perfect Sunday morning Memorial Day service.  Ebenezer Chapel has a Memorial Day celebration once a year in its beautiful rural setting in Adams County.  The chapel was built in 1858 and remains unchanged.  After traveling over gravel roads, I arrived about 15 minutes before the service to find many people on the lawn chatting.  The chapel eventually was packed with families and so many young people.  Windows were open.  Surprisingly for residing in unheated building the piano sounded great when played by Rosie Brickman. The message was given by Sheri Renner whom we all adore.  Since I taught in Adams County for many years, there were several people I recognized as former students and even some teachers with whom I taught.  Such a positive experience.

Memorial Day begins for me on Friday evening.  Most of my mother’s family rest in the Argyle cemetery.  Most of my father’s family reside in the Colchester cemetery so I begin placing flowers at Argyle, move to Colchester and then on to Macomb as I have an aunt and uncle and a first cousin in Macomb.  I do find Memorial Day to be sad as I remember many family reunions and all those people are now gone.  Life moves on whether we want it to or not.  As long as we hold memories, these people are still with us.

Busy week as usual.  Did book work from show and everything balanced out.  Spent all week slowly unloading van and getting everything back in place though I had several empty boxes so did not take as much time as loading.  Attended the Antiques and Collectibles club meeting on the 3rd Wednesday evening at 7 pm at Macomb city hall.  It is a good group of people and I always learn something from the program.  Come join us. There was a lovely pink sunset on Wednesday but no place to pull off the road to get a photo.

Watch little TV but have discovered that I really like “Elsbeth” on CBS on Thursday evening.  Normally watch Gray’s Anatomy but when it’s not on, love Elsbeth.  Been seeing some basketball while waiting for the WGEM news.

Can’t keep up with weeds and small tress right now.  Try to spend a bit of time working on them.  Look like I have been in a battle and that the brush won as have cuts and bruises on my arms.

The American Legion in Plymouth will have a ceremony at 11 am tomorrow followed by a pot luck to which everyone is invited. I appreciate both of these events.

Hope you have a good Memorial Day weekend.  Also hope that you use it to remember those who have passed on including friends, family and veterans.  Remember to scatter Kindness and Love to all as usual but also remember that some may be in need of more Love as they think of those who have passed on.
