We Are Community for the week of Oct 12th, 2026, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 328

Well, this was the week between the two weekends of Spoon River.  Book work got done.  Took over a few more things.  The weather was just glorious.  As I mentioned last week, we had a great group of vendors in the gym.  Many of us have been there for several years and know and enjoy each other.  Hope everyone can come back next year.  The food is wonderful and worth the drive to the Red Brick School from where ever you are.

My favorite hunter from Florida arrived on Friday and brought his daughter.  So nice to see them as it has been a while.

I have a suggestion.  Imagine that!  I loved the Sullivan antique auctions in Hamilton.  Then I loved the Sullivan and Son antique auctions just west of Plymouth.  Both were absolutely great. Both chose to concentrate on Farm and machinery auctions.  I suspect they are less work than what is required to set up auctions with many small items.  Lowdermans have sold their property and Kelso only has a couple of antique auctions a year.

I often get inquiries about households and I love that but am just not equipped to buy a large household.  Not enough room and not enough help.  I think there is a real need for a Friday or Saturday weekly or every other week auction.  One would need a fairly large space where things could be set out, not on hay racks, but on tables.  There should not be a huge number of items but enough to last a couple of hours.  One would have to be sure that all the items were not left overs from yard sales. There would also need to be food served and this could help make income for the business.  This would be a great opportunity to sell the items when you are cleaning out the parents or grandparents’ home or are just downsizing.  You may have also noticed that a lot of younger people are not interested in their parents’ collections.

Frequent evening auctions would also a great way to socialize and make friends.  Being socially active and interacting with others is very important for our health.  If you are looking to start a small business, why not consider this idea.  It could be a fun and worthwhile opportunity.

Perhaps because I am getting older, I have noticed that so many have had very serious illness this year.  A friend from Keokuk has had cancer.  A gentleman in the gym was in the hospital for quite a stretch.  Another friend in the gym also has struggled with cancer. My hunter has had very serious health problems.  I too have had some.   It should not be difficult in our society to get good health treatment but often it is.  Pray for all those with health issues and that they find the answers and treatment which they need and deserve.

I hope you have a chance to stop and enjoy the wonderful weather we have been and are having.  Personally, have spent four of those days looking up the stairway from the gym at the Red Brick School.  That is not all bad but would have also enjoyed being out in the sunshine.  We have a few more days before real October weather sets in.  Enjoy it!

Scatter Kindness, Love and prayers.
