I have one of those old-fashioned malt machines where you put the ice cream and milk in a metal cup and push it up and the rod spins and mixes them to perfection. Reminds me of days long gone when going to the Macomb Dairy for chocolate malts was a wonderful treat.
Really busy week. I am the keeper of lots of photos for both the Welch and Steiner families. My mom’s family goes back many generations; the Steiner family came over in the late 1800’s. Since I have no children and the Welch family is scattered, felt it was time to make sure the photos were in good hands, so invited a cousin from Michigan to come and go through many of the things with me. I have a great grandmother who was married to a Civil War soldier but she refused his pension because she did not need it. We were up till wee hours going through things and identifying many of the photos. Interesting that “wedding photos” could be taken at any time back then. My grandmother’s “wedding photo” shows her and her husband holding their first child, my cousins’ grandfather. Thought I had given the Bible of the Black man buried at Argyle cemetery to the museum in Macomb but found there were six Bibles in the family trunk including that Bible. Gave them the wrong one! We also worked in a trip to the Legacy Theater to see the flag dancers from Belgium and to attend the Antiques and Collectibles Club meeting in Macomb. We have already planned for his return in November when antique show season winds down.
More dismantling of America this week. If you can’t do away with a department, just fire all its employees and that takes care of it. Gone- the Department of Education. Who needs to be educated anyway.
Attended the Nauvoo pageant on Thursday. It is always a wonderful presentation. There were so many performers in the production that there were dancers on the ground in front of the stage. Well worth a trip to Nauvoo to see either the Nauvoo or British Pageant.
Have a really big yard and lots up town too. Unwanted trees keep coming up. I actually bought a small chain saw then decided that I liked all my fingers and called Knight Tree Service. They came this week and took down many of the saplings and cut up the huge limb that fell last week during the storm. Thank you, Carl.
Dr. John Hallwas gave a presentation to the Hancock County Historic Society on Saturday. He spoke about Eliza Snow, Thomas Gregg and John Hay. All were well known people from Hancock County history. What you may not know is that they all wrote poetry. Very nice presentation.
If you have fruit flies like I do because I normally have fresh fruit on the counter, put out a shallow bowl of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of Dawn dish soap. They love the mixture enough to drown in it. I can tell you white vinegar does not work.
We have to do better. It is OK to have an opinion which may not match your neighbors opinion. We do not need to hate each other just because we may not agree on everything. Work really hard to understand “where they are coming from” and then just agree to disagree if necessary and move on. “Love you neighbor as yourself.” Love not Hate makes America Great.
