We Are Community for the week of June 29th, 2026, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 313

Has been an interesting and for the most part a fun week.  On Tuesday there was a retirement party for Jerry Peabody.  Seems like we should have thrown a party for him but instead he treated us to fine food and conversation.  Wishing him all the best in retirement.

Thursday attended the Lowderman Auction.  They have sold the facility but assured us that they would continue auctions.  I hope so as we need live auctions to help supply the antique store.

Thursday was the start of an eventful weekend.  I was scheduled for sleep study at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.  Was not sure just what to expect.  Thanks to the pictorial map, I found the facility.  It is really nice.  The gentleman conducting the study could not have been more kind or understanding.  A few weeks ago an errant hose attacked the toe of my sandal and sent me sprawling on the concrete. My left shoulder has complained every since then.  Got on my John Sullivan T shirt and had many colored wires attached to my head, chest, legs etc.  Great glue!  None of them came off and I did get the glue washed out of my hair!  The nice man suggested that I sleep on my back as that is when we are most likely to have sleep problems.  My shoulder had other ideas.  There was no way it was going to allow that and complained so bitterly and painfully that I finally had to call and ask for help.  Rest of night was spent on side so don’t know if we got the data we needed.

On Saturday the Stoneware Museum of Monmouth hosted the 5th Annual Stoneware Fest and Swap Meet. Ray and Cindy Brinkman think of everything.  There are tents to shelter the vendors, shuttles to take you from and to the parking lots, an ambulance on standby, police to assist one. Wonderful food, free water and ice cream and of course stoneware.  There were seventy dealers form several states with wonderful stoneware for sale.  A stoneware junky paradise.  It was a great day.

Sunday was not to be outdone by Saturday.  Friends from Golden invited me to their church service.  There was also the draw of home-made ice cream.  How can one turn down an invitation like that.  Nice day.  Lawn chairs were set up on the church lawn and the service was out doors.  We sang many hymns familiar from the Emmaus experience.  After the service we enjoyed a wonderful meal.  And after the meal, ice cream.  Thanks so much for inviting me, it was just a great experience.  I am going to share from their bulletin.  It is words of invitation.

“Welcome to the joyful-may you be able to share that joy here.

Welcome to the tired and weary-may you be able to find rest here.

Welcome to the lonely-may you find community here.

Welcome to the sick-may you find healing here.

Welcome to those who mourn-may you find comfort here.

Welcome to the foreigner, to the stranger, to the refugee-may you find safety here.

Welcome to every nation-may you find hospitality here.”

This is what America should be!
