We Are Community for the week of August 12th, 2024, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 215

A classmate asked me to tell you that the Colusa School Reunion will be held Aug 24th at the Smoking Gun Clubhouse at 995 ECT 1550 near Hamilton, Il at 4 PM.  Also don’t forget Plymouth Old settlers on August 23rd, 24th and 25th.  Several events on Sunday this year including church services and the carnival.

Attended the Metzger Board meeting on Monday evening.  Shame on me as I had never known these were open to the public.  The chair of the Board is Randy Smith and members are Brad Cludrey, Linda Higgens, Kevin Lingenfelter and Nancy Ussery.  Two of the Board members were absent.  I asked about some flowers for the Plymouth Square and was told that they do not do projects but rather try to fund them. They would like to have suggestions form the people of Plymouth for ways to improve our community.  One suggestion presented at the meeting was to build a pickle ball court for Plymouth.  Am not sure what pickle ball is but do know that it is very popular now. I would like to see more flowers around the Square and some of the sidewalks on the Square are in really poor condition. If you have some good ideas that would benefit the community, please let some members of the Board know.  The money must be used in Plymouth.  I know of no other community that has the potential of Plymouth.  The Metzger Family was very generous to our small community.  Plymouth could be really a beautiful place to live and work if we would all pull together.

Hope you have been able to catch some of the Olympics.  They have just been great to watch.  First, I have never been to Paris!  The photos of the city are interesting.  Since Russia was banned from these Olympics because of the invasion of Ukraine, there is less competition for medals.  The United States has done very well.  Several competitors have medaled at three or more Games.  Winners we would consider to be old by sports standards have done very well. The cameramen often show people in the audience and there have been a number of movie stars as well as family members of the athletes in attendance.  It is neat to see the reactions of the audience members.  There are lots of really close shots of the athletes and I am intrigued by all the makeup and false eye lashes.  It is nice to look your best on the world stage.  One new “sport” is what I call brake dancing.  I know nothing about it but was amazed to watch some of the performances Saturday evening.  I cannot even imagine being able to support myself on one arm or on my head and I have no idea how one judges such an event! The next Olympic games in 2028 will be held in California.

The Village Board meeting was on Wednesday evening.  All the members were present except the mayor.  I know that being a Board member may not be a fun job but it is a very important job.  It looks like there are several seats up for election.  If you are truly interested in making Plymouth, or your home town, a better place to live, then consider running.  Run for the right reasons.  We need a policeman.  We need properties cleaned up.  We need people who will take the responsibility seriously.  Good government starts at the local level like town boards, school boards, election boards and all the other thankless jobs.

There is a Farmer’s market at the Augusta stop sign every Friday beginning at 3 pm.  Were lots of farm fresh veggies there on Friday.  Please support the vendors.

There was a new moon this week and some beautiful sunsets.  Hope you got to enjoy them.  The weather has been fantastic for August.  Cool and sunny days.  Have a great week.  Scatter Kindness and Love to those around you.
