We Are Community for the week of July15th, 2024, by Joyce steiner

We Are Community 211

June Shappell just turned 100 and many of us sent birthday cards.  She passed away on July 13th.  My sister-in-law, Ila Steiner Robb, passed away on Thursday evening.  Leaves me being the last of a generation and with a very small family.  Our sympathy to the families and friends of both these ladies.

I read a daily devotion and every so often a thought or sentence stands out.  That happened on Friday’s reading.  “Being loved fully and unconditionally changes the way we act in the world.  We are free to love ourselves and to share that unconditional love with others”.  This can go two ways.  We may feel that unconditional love from God or from another person.  It is so important to feel loved.  It is of the upmost importance for our mental health to also love ourselves and to be all that we can be.  “Love they neighbor as thyself.”  If we know who we are and what we stand for then we are less likely to be led to fear others especially those who may not look exactly like us or think exactly as we think.

Had an appointment with the dermatologist on Wednesday morning.  As that does not take long, had time to grab a biscuit at Hardees and sit on a bench on the courthouse lawn.  Beautiful day and beautiful lawn.  Just nice to stop for a few minutes and enjoy the day.

Julie Wise and I were hostesses for Plymouth Circle on Wednesday evening at the PCCC.  The Center is restored and ready to be rented for social events.  The building is quite pretty if you have not been inside.  Call 309 333 7778 if you are interested in seeing the building or renting it.

Plymouth Circle will be hosting a dessert stand during Old Settlers.  There will be ice cream, cake, pie and cookies for sale with the proceeds going toward the renovations of the PCCC.  The stand will be on the East side of the Square.

Plymouth had a water main break this week and we had a 48-hour boil order.  That was not a problem as I had several mugs of water and tea already made in the frig.  But what does one do about ice cubes made by the frig?  Wondered how I would tell which ones were made during the boil order.  Realized that was not a problem when I looked in the ice tray.  The ones made after the break were a bright yellow orange.  Just picked them out, threw them away and used the rest!

Forty-two years with the same FEIN number and the same business name but 1st Data decided one of them was wrong and wrote me a letter requesting immediate attention or they would withhold 24% of all sales for taxes.  Have spent several days this week trying to get that straightened out.  Not sure that I have succeeded.  Also very hesitant to give out any information as there are so many scams today.  Difficult to know just what to respond to.

Spent the afternoon with the Steiner family as we were writing an obituary for my sister-in-law and trying to make dates for the visitation and graveside services.  Are planning to have both later in August when everyone can attend.

Attended the Nauvoo Pageant on Thursday evening.  It is just a wonderful event.  One can reserve seats ahead of time.  Several of the people around us came over to welcome us and were so very nice.  The bagpipe band plays before the show and there are many activities such as dancing, tug of war and more to watch or participate in.  Great evening.  Lovely weather and beautiful show.  You will be treated royally and everything is free.

Several lovely sunsets this week.  Also, some nice gentle rains.  Hope you have a good week.  Pause your day to watch the sunset or the sunrise if you are an early day person.  Scatter Kindness and Love as it may make someone’s day as well as yours.
