We Are Community for the week of May 5th, 2025, by Joyce Steiner

We Are community 253

Any week on the green side of the grass is a good week!

Monday was a busy day as are all Mondays.  Started at the dentist office where I got a new crown yet no one seems to think of me as a queen.  Immediately headed to the Illinois Education Association Retired meeting where John Curtis spoke of the “Giving Gardens” located in Macomb and now branching into other communities.  This is a nonprofit group which provides public access to gardens where residents can harvest vegetables, berries, herbs and flowers for free.  It also gives people the chance to learn about gardening and to enjoy the company of others in a healthy setting.  We also got to see one of the gardens and where plants are started for the gardens.  Very interesting project.  When I was growing up, many grew a lot of their food and now far too many of us rely on grocery stores for our fresh foods.  Was impressed with this group and their efforts.

Noticed a lot of blowing dust so glad that we got some rain this week.  Went to Farm King to buy some garden tools which were on sale and ended up in the plant department.  They have really nice plants and a 4 pack of flowers are cheaper than a 4 pack at Walmart.  Also, some lovely variegated sweet potato vines with three in a pot. Great selection of vegetables and flowers.

There was a lovely new moon in the western sky this week-hope you got to see it.  Though some cloudy and rainy days, there were some really pretty sunsets.

Still teaching Puff about Kindness and Love and she is doing well with her studies.  Last week I told you I had gotten Puff a new kitten.  This week Puff spent a lot of time in front of the bathroom door where the kitten was living.  I could hear communication from time to time.  Let them be together on Friday and things went pretty well.  More time on Saturday and even more time together on Sunday.  Think we have cleared most of the problems.  Will pay attention to both and feed them separately but think all will be well and that they will grow to be good companions.  New child is Sally after Dick, Jane and Baby Sally readers.  Puff and Spot were their pets.

Saturday, J and M Building Supply in Fandon had a huge open house.  They have an absolutely amazing variety of goods. It is an Amish owned store and there was a really large group of Amish families in attendance.  I was surprised that the Air Evac helicopter was there for demonstration as well as a fire department showing how to get out of a wrecked car.  Were also lovely Amish grown plants for sale.  Nice event.

Came home on Saturday to watch the evening news and found that the Kentucky Derby was on instead of the news.  Have not been able to watch the Derby for many years and loved getting to see it.  The track was muddy and the horses and riders were covered in mud at the end of the race.  Was interesting that most of the jockeys were from other countries.

Hope you have a great week.  Hope you are enjoying the beautiful spring flowers.  My peach trees are loaded with tiny peaches.  Scatter Kindness and Love.
