We Are Community for the week of April 28th, 2025, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 252

Our world suffered a great loss this week.  Pope Francis was a Pope for all people.  I saw on the news that he had a favorite bakery where he ordered many cakes, like his own, for the poor.  I understand that the poor and marginalized also had prominent places at his funeral.  He was a spokesman for all people and spoke up when he felt people were not being treated fairly.    May his successor be as humble and mighty as Francis.

Not only was last Sunday Easter Sunday, it was a stormy day in our area.  Tornados were reported as close as Camp Point with considerable damage.  In Plymouth, our power was out for two hours.  I commend Ameren for their excellent service.  When my power came back on, there was a loud pop.  Immediately went down and checked the meter and to see if my house was on fire!  Everything looked ok and my phone indicated that my solar system was ok.  Do not know what caused the loud noise.

I have been writing “We Are Community” for 252 weeks and before that I wrote the “Plymouth News” for the local paper.  Cannot think why a physics major would like to write a news column.  This week a friend asked that I take his name off my column list.  What surprises me the most is that he was the first one to ask that.  The political scene has just become so distressing for me that I could no longer not mention it.  One of my best friends did not vote the way that I did and we are still best friends.  Friendship should be on a higher level than politics.  I have often said “that if two people agree on everything, one of them is unnecessary” and I do believe that.  Each of us is entitled to our beliefs.  I think we should “agree to disagree and move on”.  I cannot believe how many positive comments I get on this humble column and again would like to thank each of you who continually support me in my efforts and for your encouraging and kind words.

I have always thought that Puff needs a companion as she is alone much of the day.  She is young and has lots of energy to burn.  She races through the house etc.  Finally acted on what I thought and got her a kitten to play with and cuddle.  She hates it.  When my neighbor brought it over, I had it on my lap and Puff came to look at it.  She said nothing.  Later I brought it near her and she exploded.  She snarled, lashed out at the kitten and bit me so I took the kitten to safety.  Checked the internet to see how to introduce a new kitty into a household and it said to be patient.   Currently Puff’s new little buddy is in the bathroom in her own little world.  She has the loudest purr I think I have ever heard.  Tomorrow I will try to find a tall baby gate so that she and Puff can see each other but not directly interact.  It seems that I must teach Puff about Kindness and Love!

Colchester Historic Society met on Monday evening.  The program was on Camp Ellis.  Camp Ellis is an amazing short period in our local history.  It is just astounding how quickly the Camp was built, utilized and demolished with parts of it finding use in many communities.

Have a great week.  The spring flowers are glorious.  Scatter Kindness and Love.
