We Are Community for the week of Dec 2nd, 2024, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 231

The American Legion in Plymouth will have a soup supper on Saturday December 7th beginning at 5 pm at the Legion Hall on the west side of the Plymouth Square.  There will be chili, vegetable and oyster soups plus sandwiches and desserts.

Genevieve Simmens of Nauvoo passed away on November 19th.  We both had B&Bs before they became popular, were on the cutting edge when they were just getting started.  She will be missed.

So sorry to hear that the Brooklyn Unted Methodist Church had its last service today.  Churches that have been in existence for a very long time are closing because of many factors.  One of them being that there is much less population in rural areas than there used to be and another is that many younger people do not attend church or go to mega churches.

Small business Saturday was not well observed at Plymouth Rock as I had two customers all day.  Friday was better as there were people from out of town visiting relatives here who did stop by the store.  Thank you.

Satruday also saw the first Plymouth Light Parade around the Square.  There were several fire trucks, Santa in his sleigh, a band and some other nice floats and lighted side by sides.  Was a nice addition to begin the Christmas season.  A big thank you to the people who organized the parade and to the ladies of the PCCC who served hot chocolate and cookies at the Village Hall.

Told you last week that I had an angel food cake let loose of the side of the pan and partially smash.  A classmate texted to tell me the same thing happened to her only the cake fell completely out of the pan.  Both were Hy-Vee brand mixes.  Bake them well done!

Worked on cleaning fish ponds and mowing leaves this week.  Was thinking of letting the ponds freeze so I could empty them by taking out the ice as it froze but found live fish in at least two of the ponds so will cover them and try to bring the fish through the winter.  Small gold fish can grow quite large if they live long enough.

Guess Plymouth does not have “porch pirates” as had a package left on a bench in front of the garage instead of on the porch.  Leaving packages on the bench is better than on the side porch where I don’t find things until spring!

Got my Christmas cards made.  I normally go to Walgreens and try to use their kiosk. I am never successful whether it is the machines or my lack of understanding them or the fact that they are not working.  To shorten the story, the cards are printed, Puff is off center and it is not the card I wanted but my stress level was managed and they are done!

Again I want to tell all of you who compliment this column just how much I appreciate your kind words.

This week was Thanksgiving week.  We have so much to be thankful for though sometimes it may not seem like it.  We do not live in Ukraine or Israel and are not bombed daily.  If we do not have enough to eat, there are food pantries and most can find room in a shelter if needed.  Most of us have an abundance.  Enjoyed dinner at the home of a nephew and family and enjoyed meeting some new people.  Also enjoyed not having to cook the whole meal!  Hope you had a good holiday.  Hope you got to share a meal with family or friends.  Hope you remembered to give thanks.  May you find Love and acceptance in your life and may you remember to scatter Love and Kindness to all.
