201 W Summer St, Plymouth, IL 62367 is my address. Including this because there was a letter (to me) printed in the Journal Pilot. Appeared the writers were more interested in pushing their agenda rather than writing to me. Actually, I love the “fan mail” I get from you and really appreciate all the kind comments that are given me by you readers. Thank You!
Attended the Untold Nauvoo Stories conference last year for the first time and was totally impressed. The 2025 edition was Feb 7th and 8th and I looked forward to attending again this year. It was great. For those of you who think that history might be boring, well that is just not the case. Topics ranged from “Victorian Speed Dating: or, a Step Into Historical Dance” to “Bigfoot Sightings in McDonough County” to “Untold Stories of Hancock County Cemeteries” given by Plymouth’s own Heather Hoelscher Greenslaugh and Tim Phelps. There was also great food and time for interacting with old and new friends. This is a very worthwhile two days and the dates for 2026 are Feb 13 and 14.
A note-bought and sold a pair of pine cut out feet which looked like bigfoot feet. They had leather bindings on them so one could attach them to your shoes and make bigfoot prints. Hum wonder if they were ever used in this area!
Also attended the Nauvoo Historic Society quarterly meeting on Saturday evening. The topic was the building of the Keokuk Dam. This was a very informative program with photos and more. The myth that there are bodies in the concrete of the dam was dispelled as they would have weakened the concrete. I did not know that Ameren owns the dam or that getting the electricity produced to St Louis was such a great feat to overcome. I will be going to the Dam Museum in Keokuk and asking for a tour by Joe Morgan who gave the presentation. It was great.
The Plymouth Village Board was to meet on Wednesday but could not due to the lack of a quorum-sad.
The last two weeks have been very distressing for some of us. It appears that a very few rich are trying to become richer while trying to cut programs for the very poor like Medicaid, school lunches, food for the poor in other countries and so much more. In my not so humble opinion, that is just wrong. I loved the original space program-in fact it was much of the reason I chose to major in physics. However, I am not in support of trying to colonize Mars. Instead, we need to spend that money to make our earth support humans for a longer time. We have to get our heads around climate change as a reality. Though I do not have children or grand children many of you do and they deserve a planet that will support human life for centuries to come.
Seems a bit flippant to say “have a good week”. Well have a good week! Enjoy the Super Bowl. Pray for our nation and our world. Do not just pray for but also do what you can to improve your corner of our world. We may not be able to solve the state’s, the nation’s or the world’s problems but we can visit those who are in nursing homes or who cannot get out, send a birthday or sympathy card. We can text a friend or give a piece of candy to a kid or smile at and speak to a stranger. Scatter Kindness and Love.
