Not sure just how long an era is but I do know that one ended in Plymouth on Monday. Was awakened to the sound of heavy equipment below my bedroom window.
When Ben and I moved to Plymouth in 1978, there was a small white house across the street to the east of us. The yard had no flowers or no garden which is a bit unusual and the occupants were not at home a lot of the time. Turned out the home was owned by Dot and Small Burdett who were circus performers-yes really! Their act was called “The Burdetts” and Small had a dog act and a slack wire act and Dot did foot juggling and the rolling globe among other acts. They traveled much of the year. There was also a box car on the property which had been fixed up for Jimmy Burdett, Small’s father, to live in but he never did live there. Jimmy had owned Burdett’s Tavern also in Plymouth.
The house was a converted chicken coop. It was cute inside and the ceiling was pitched so that Dot could practice her routines. But because it was a former chicken house, there was little to no foundation under it. Small passed many years ago and we took Dot “under our wings” even taking her on trips to the South with us. Eventually I also lost Ben and Dot and I did a lot together and we helped each other. We bought the property many years ago to give Dot some money and to let us decide who would live across the street. The house sold a year or two ago and the new owner wants to build on it so on Monday, a big yellow machine tore down the home. In a way sad to see it come down but I also know with no foundation, it was inevitable. So, an “end to an era”.
Sunday, the world watched the Superbowl. I know nothing about football but watch for the advertisements and the half time show. Was disappointed in many of the ads as I did not “get” a lot of them. Also did not understand a lot of the halftime show but as I have learned this week, there was really a lot of meaning to it which I just didn’t realize until I read about it. One should never criticize without understanding.
Have a land line and normally don’t answer it. One day this week the caller ID gave a lady’s name so I answered. A gentleman said he was updating my records for CVS. I should have known immediately that this was a scam. He had my address and asked if it was correct. I said “yes”. Never, never say “yes” to a caller as they can use this for fraud later. By then I was awake enough to hang up.
As the weather prediction is pretty awful, I went to Macomb after closing the store on Friday to get bird food. Little guys and gals are eating vast amounts of food. Stopped by Hy-Vee for dinner and they had steak. Was surprised as that is a Thursday special, but the lady reminded me it was Valentine’s Day so I had steak.
Don’t watch much TV but when a show called Matlock and starring Cathy Bates came on, I thought I might like it so have watched it several times. Turns out I don’t really like it after all however there is a show called “Elsbeth” following it. Always just wondered why they spelled Elizabeth wrong and never stayed tuned for it. Actually, it is a charming show! Now I just tune in for Elsbeth. If you haven’t watched it, why not give it a try.
Supposed to be a really cold week. Hopefully we will all make it through the week and the next week is supposed to be in the 50’s. Keep those bird feeders filled and those water bowls plugged in so the critters have food and water. Scatter Kindness and love, not only to the critters but also to all the people you meet. The world is upsetting and we can all use a bit of Love.
