We Are Community for the week of Nov 11th, 2024, by Joyce Steiner

We Are Community 228

There is little I can say about Tuesday, so I will just say that I will wait for a couple of years to see what happens.  An election should not be about “sides”, it should be about doing what is in the best interest of the country and its people.

Last week they were predicting up to 7 inches of rain for our area so I did what I could.  I went to Quincy and bought two sump pumps.  I have two in my basement and one up town.  They are fairly old and I do not know the life expectancy of sump pumps.  It’s called “insurance”.  I do not go out and buy bread and milk when storms are predicted however.  Was happy for the rain but did not want so much in just a couple of days.  I think Plymouth actually got about 2 1/2 inches of rain, not seven.

Attended the Plymouth Village Board meeting on Wednesday.  Two members were absent.  If I understand correctly, the Board changed the Village Clerk’s position from elected to appointed.  Lots of work being done on the Square.  A walking trail is going around the inside of the park.  I hope people will use it and get to know others better and get some exercise to improve health.  The work in the park is from a grant.  The sidewalk in front of the library and the street signs are from the Metzger Trust.  Other suggestions for the Metzger Trust include more sidewalks, more street signs and a pickle ball/tennis court to be placed at the ball park.  If anyone has ideas for the improvement of Plymouth, let members of the Metzger Board know.  Randy Smith is the head of the Board.

Attended the Lowderman auction on Thursday.  Filled the van as usual.  Bought one lovely quilt and some others too.  Got a White Hall bird house.  Still deciding whether to add it to my collection or let someone else add it to theirs.  I love kitties and got a very cute art pottery kitty.  I know it will come home with me. Bought two nice book cases which will go in the aisle as you enter the main store.  Want to consolidate my books on antiques even more.   It was a good day!

Had hunters all this week.  They were Maurie, Mike and Max from Mississippi.  Also Marcell.  Puff asked to be called Muff this week.  Great guys.  Were three generation of the same family.  Most of my hunting guests either own or lease land but these gentlemen used an outfitter service.  Said there was a hunting lodge in Tennessee, Il.  I had no idea of that.  I believe they got one deer.  They were very happy with what they found here and I am pretty sure they will be back.

They had no idea of the history associated with our county.  I actually ordered a copy of “Nightfall at Nauvoo” this afternoon to send to them.  Hancock County has such a rich history that I doubt many of us know.  I joined the Nauvoo Historic Society last week and also belong to the Colchester and the Hancock County Historic Societies.  We need to know history for many reasons, one is so that we will not repeat mistakes already made.

Hope you have a good week.  Hope if your “side” won the election that you will refrain from gloating and if your “side” lost that you will give the new president a chance to show what he will actually do for the country.  None of us knows what will happen in the next few years.  It is always important to scatter Kindness and Love.  There is not only a political divide but there are so many without the necessities of life and also those who have serious illness.  “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
